11 January 2008: 12 weeks left

The festive season has now well and truly passed and the majority of the team are back from holidays (with the exception of Seb) and training hard (with the exception of Seb also).

Angus finally succeeded in co-ordinating a team bike ride, although amid fears of a lack of real road experience on the bikes, the original plan for a London-Brighton ride was abandoned in favour of two laps of Richmond Park. The fears were well founded... Rhys and John P, both bike virgins, fell off on the first lap. In a completely unrelated incident, John P's front wheel reflector exploded and hit Rhys in the head. They quickly got the hang of it and Will was so impressed that he took them down the wrong side of the road in Putney into an oncoming bus and then on slalom training through the six lanes of traffic on Putney Bridge

The phrase "all the gear, no idea" was heard echoing in the park... John P had arrived at SBR Sports wearing his wrestling-style Lycra cycling bib, looking strangely reminiscent of Freddie Mercury circa 1978 . The guy from SBR Sports preferred to liken him to Jack Black in Nacho Libre and was unable to adjust John's bike as he was doubled over laughing.

Many of the team completed an 18 mile training run on Wednesday. Pat complained of injury but still managed to be stronger, fitter and quicker than all the others. Other health problems are emerging - Will has tendonitis in his foot and can't run for two weeks and John D has developed acute tightness in the hamstrings. John P has tightness in the tensor fasciae latae in each thigh which might be the same thing

Rhys was delighted to complete the 18 miler, which was five miles further than he had ever run before. His growing confidence is apparent and as he commented, "I will be fine as long as I can cut back on the binge drinking."

Finally, we are delighted to welcome Conrad as the final piece in our jigsaw . Giles dispelled the new boy's fears that he is behind the pace by showing him a current photo of Seb. They say a camera puts on 10 pounds, but to judge by the photo below, that still leaves 200 pounds unaccounted for!
